At Love to Swim, we believe learning to swim is only the beginning of the journey. The real magic happens when confidence in the water grows into a lifelong passion — and even a career.
That’s why we created the Teacher Training Pathway (TTP) — a structured 12-week programme that helps young people in East London take their first steps into the world of swimming instruction.
The Teacher Training Pathway offers a hands-on, fully supported route for trainees aged 14 and above to gain real experience in the pool. Participants start as volunteers, assisting our experienced teachers during live lessons. Over time, they develop confidence, communication skills, and a deep understanding of how to teach others.
By the end of the programme, trainees can work towards their Swim England Level 1 Assistant Teacher qualification, with opportunities to progress to Level 2 and become fully qualified instructors.
Each trainee is mentored by senior teachers, completing weekly reflection logs and receiving personalised feedback — helping them grow both personally and professionally.
Funded in part through local partnerships — including support from Riverside — the programme is designed to create a self-reinforcing cycle: today’s volunteers become tomorrow’s teachers.
By training and employing local young people, we not only strengthen our teaching team but also open doors to meaningful, long-term employment within the community.
When the initial grant period ends, the Teacher Training Pathway will continue through a blend of reinvested lesson revenue, small trainee fees, and sponsorship from local partners. It’s a model that’s both sustainable and socially impactful, ensuring a steady stream of qualified, passionate teachers for years to come.
With each new cohort, we see trainees who once stood nervously by the pool transform into confident leaders who inspire others to swim.
Their journey embodies everything Love to Swim stands for — Commitment, Consistency, Quality, and Love.
If you know a young person who’s enthusiastic, reliable, and ready to make a splash in their community, we’d love to hear from them. The next cohort begins soon.
